By now, you should be able to tell that Greek Cuisine is one of my favorites and that I will not hesitate to enter any establishment that I come across.  Myself and a few friends of mine decided to stop through on a Friday to unwind after work.  The Friday scene wasn’t bad at all.  The restaurant was packed but not overcrowded.  So we were able to grab a table, the last one, come to think about it.  For some reason, whenever visiting a greek spot for the first time, I feel the inherent need to try out the gyros first.  Maybe it sets a precedent for future dishes or maybe it gives a brief history of the place serving it.  Nonetheless, it’s my staple and it’s worked for me so far w/ greek spots.  The gyro was good though nothing to tap someone on the shoulder about.  The fries were another thing!   Amazingly crispy and fresh, this side is definitely bragworthy, my friend Alissa will HAPPILY testify!  I didn’t have time to stay for dessert so I did the next best thing… Order some some to go.  I found it a bit hard to ignore the Baklava Cheesecake  and if you’re a fan of both Baklava and Cheesecake, you would’ve been in the same predicament.  The dessert was okay… but I possibly would’ve enjoyed them more if they were separate.  -R.  3.5/5

Russia House, a place which I gladly call a favorite and not just because they offer you free, delicious rye bread w/ butter as soon as you sit.  But because I’ve always been a cinema fan and from the first time I stepped foot indoors here, I’ve always kept in mind that, sooner or later, I’m going to shoot a scene for one of “my” movies here.  The atmosphere couldn’t be better.  I’m HUGE on “optional” privacy and Russia House offers that completely.  But this day, my friends and I didn’t mind and just decided on grabbing a table to feed our souls.  My plate(s) of the evening were Potato Mushroom Cocotte and Russian Borsch.  I had the first as an appetizer and treated the latter as my main dish, though Borsch can be served either way.  The Cocotte, hands down, is one of the best appetizers I have EVER tasted in a restaurant!  Potatoes, Wild Mushroom, Cherries, and Savoie Cheese w/ Truffled Cream & Baguettes… *wipes drool*  Bless the should who sat down and concocted such a heavenly equations.  The rich, creamy bowl would have any person asking for more.  Trust me!  The Borsch was good times as well.   Brisket, oxtail, caraway and sour cream blended perfectly in the beet soup caused me to take my time and savor the plate, and maybe because beet juice and white t-shirts are a terrible mix!  But with the food and the amazing service,  Russia House will definitely catch my face sooner than later!  -R.  5/5

Now, if you’re a fan of Pho and you have yet to visit this establishment… maybe you should do some shifting around of tmrw’s schedule.  I’ve been to Pho Thom’s a few months ago and decided to grab a couple friends for a bite and a playoff game.   I’m quite curious as to why it took me so long to return but the “reunion” was greatly enjoyed.  I decided go with the Thai Pineapple Fried Rice and Bangkok Wings.  The deep fried wings were stuffed with shrimp, crab meat, and vegetables.  Yeah, I was thinking the same thing… I could go for a plate of those right now!  The fried rice is a staple of any Thai restaurant though Pho Thom’s rendition is pretty good.  The rice was not too spicy and the fresh sweet pineapples was the perfect yang to balance it out.  The heartburn afterwards was definitely worth it.  And judging by my friend Rich’s face, the Pho was, as well.  -R.  4/5

It’s Sunday, the Orioles won and orange and black is everywhere.  I headed up to Baltimore to meet up with friends after the game for a little birthday celebration for two friends.   The spot of the day… Nacho Mama’s!  And the plates of the day… Chicken Toes and a Duck Goat Cheese Quesadilla!  Yes, the name does neither justice on how delicious and spectacular these two were!  First, Chicken Toes, jerk seasoned boneless strips with a tomatillo and pineapple dipping sauce that was the biz!  These spicy tender chicken strips have earned a spot on the receipts of each and every visit I make to Mama’s in the future.  As much Jerk I’ve eaten in my life, I would’ve never known that it went hand-in-hand with pineapple anything.   I seriously thought about ordering a plate of it to go and would have if I didn’t spend so much earlier.  Now, I could write on and on about the toes, but the main event was the duck quesadilla.  It’s been awhile since I had duck, so why not a “re-introduce” it myself in Baltimore?!  Standing outside with Ed, we glanced over menu and knew exactly what I was choosing.  Duck is a special kind of meat and to gamble by adding goat cheese to the equation was one the paid off… HIGHLY.  But also “hidden” in the tortillas were monterey jack, cheddar, roasted peppers, and black beans.  Top it off with exceptional service and you get a high recommendation from me everytime!   -R.  5/5

So I cut out beef, chicken and turkey for 40+ days with a co-worker for lent.  And truth be told, I was willing to do some “strange” things for a burger and such by the time it was over.  More so, for a bite of lamb.   So, I ventured to the town over and had  Greek for lunch.  Yia Yia’s was the choice of the day and judging by the crowd inside, it was others’ too.  I went with the Moussaka and, of course, a lamb/beef gyro.  The moussaka came first and since I was famished, I couldn’t wait for the gyro.  The green beans were great… but a little too oily for my taste.  The potatoes… fantastic!  I wish I had more.  In fact, I’d order a side if I could right now!  The moussaka… was good.  But nothing to write home about.  Maybe, it’s because I found the breading on top to be soggy.  Or that the portion was a bit small for the tag.   Regardless, the meal sat on the wall for me, though the lamb/beef gyro was quite impressive.  Can’t wait til $5 Tuesday!   -R.  3.5/5

It’s lunchtime… and besides breakfast or dinner, when is it a better time to have sushi?!  Though I opted to have sushi my first go ‘round here, I decided to go against the grain and try the shrimp teriyaki. And, I must say.. I was quite surprised when it came along with a “boatload” of accessories.  Miso, salad, pot stickers, tempura…. All levels were thumbs up.  And the food to price ratio was indeed an eye-opener, a bit rare for Rockville eateries.  Though I came in for pick up, the service I received was quite welcoming and I could tell that attitude from the waiters and chefs remain unchanged for those who have time to sit and eat.  I inquired about having just broccoli/sweet potato tempura instead of the normal assorted variety, the chef took time to come out and converse with me. Sunday, I decided to meet up with my friends Ed and Alissa for lunch.  Playing it on the fly, I nominated Kloby’s because it was close to my friends and also, they took me there for my birthday dinner, which was QUITE a pleasant surprise.  It played out nicely the first time, seeing that I just came back from work and that I was starving on an unnatural level.  I decided to give the beef ribs a second try.  The first experience was highly enjoyable and I already made my decision before entering the parking lot.  I decided to switch up the sides this time and go for collard greens and mac and cheese.  After entering and meeting up with my friends, we decided to quickly order some appetizers.  We were assisted by a lovely young lady by the name of Paula.  Her attitude and help was definitely a deciding factor for today’s grading.  I went for the Maryland Jumbo Crab soup.  Though I’m an official Marylander, I haven’t had enough bowls of this soup to certify that I am.   Delicious… Amazing… I can seriously go on about this soup.  This soup was so flavorful that I had to pas this bowl to my friends just so they could experience what I was going through.  There wasn’t a deficiency of crab meat, a “thumbs down” aspect which many Maryland restaurants achieve when offering plates with crab meat.  The potatoes, corn, celery, carrots… proper amounts of worked perfectly to create this robust flavor, which I’m yearning for as I write.  Now, on to the main course… The BBQ beef ribs!!!  Now, as you read before… I was yearning to recreate this experience.   I was close to doing so but I didn’t, sadly.  First time, I seriously thought things were as perfect as can be.  There was nothing wrong that could be written or said about my ribs.  This time around, the ribs were still enjoyable but I felt that I had more fat on my ribs than I expected.  The ribs were great but it seemed that whenever I took a bite, there was a fatty substance where I was expecting meat.  It wasn’t enough for me to frown, but enough for me to take notice.  The collard greens on the other hand was pretty good.  Enough to make up for the mac and cheese!  The mac and cheese wasn’t exciting at all.  Personally, I feel that any establishment that offers “mac and cheese” should do something that makes their “mac and cheese” differ from any other establishment.  Something, whether it be glitter on top, a present on the bottom… something, it doesn’t matter.  Just something.  If not, then you’re working with a spot-filler and nothing more!  But their cornbread is always “good times” as my friends would say.  Nonetheless, it was pleasant experience this time around at Kloby’s.  I’ll just make sure before heading there next time that I don’t have a heavy breakfast hours before!  -R.  3.5/5

After a LONG week at work, I was in the mood for something “deli-ish”, greasy, delicious… and exactly what I came for.  So I drove around near UMCP’s campus to check out their eateries and came across a new establishment, Pizza Kingdom.  Now, there are a few pizza joints in the surrounding area that claim to have New York Style but their slices are no bigger than Pizza Hut’s.   So I decided to give this place a try, seeing that it was near by and a few people coming out w/ boxes.   As you can see, I tried to experiment with my slice and I was quite impressed with the outcome.   You have the option to add as many toppings as you’d like ($1 per topping).  And I vowed not to overdo it this time.  The feta… was amazing quite fresh.  It really complimented the beef pepperoni which I had a decent amount of.  I must say, the people on the opposite side of the counter were quite polite and inquisitive of their customers.  As the food was preparing, conversation was flowing back and forth from the vendor and customer, that it actually created a nice vibe in the deli.  It’s good to know when coming back from a late night movie with friends, there’s a spot open for us to grab a REAL NY style pizza w/out traveling to Adams Morgan just for a slice.  -R. 3/5
